Leading a healthy lifestyle is easier if you live in a community that has access to healthy foods, safe and accessible bike paths and sidewalks, a good education system, a strong economy, supportive relationships and networks, and quality health care. Unfortunately, there are location-based disparities throughout the nation and many people live in communities where leading a healthy lifestyle is difficult.

On Tuesday, October 4, 2011 from 2:00 - 3:00 pm CDT, Arthur Wendel, M.D., team lead for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Healthy Community Design Initiative (www.cdc.gov/healthyplaces), will discuss:
Healthy Families America (HFA)
Provide home visiting services to families who are at risk for adverse childhood experiences, starting prenatally or right after birth and continuing for three to five years
Healthy food in convenience stores
Encourage convenience stores, corner stores, or gas station markets to carry fresh produce and other healthier food options
Healthy food initiatives in food pantries
Combine hunger relief efforts with nutrition information and healthy eating opportunities, often with on-site cooking demonstrations, recipe tastings, produce display stands, etc.
Healthy foods at catered events
Provide more fresh fruits and vegetables, smaller portions, low fat, and reduced sodium or reduced sugar food options and other healthy foods at catered events
Healthy home environment assessments
Train volunteers, professionals, or paraprofessionals to help residents assess and reduce environmental home health risks and recommend low cost changes (e.g., improved ventilation, integrated pest management, etc.)
