In June, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation announced the 2014 winners of the RWJF Culture of Health Prize. The prize honors communities that are harnessing the collective power of leaders, partners, and stakeholders to help residents live healthier lives. The 2014 prize communities include: Buncombe County, North Carolina; Spokane County, Washington; Durham County, North Carolina; Taos Pueblo, New Mexico; Brownsville, Texas and Williamson, West Virginia.

Representing places large and small from across the nation, the RWJF Culture of Health Prize elevates communities that are making great strides in their journey toward better health. Over the next several weeks, we will take a closer look at the prize winning communities.

We begin with a look at the innovative efforts underway in Spokane County, Washington and Buncombe County, North Carolina.

  • Spokane County recognized the powerful impact education has on long-term health, and has transformed its approach to health improvement by expanding educational opportunities that empower young people. Learn more here.
  • Buncombe County brought together a broad range community partners and stakeholders to the table to create long-term and sustainable change. Learn more here.
