Using Health Impact Assessments to Shape Transit Policy

PedNet Coalition and Columbia/Boone County Public Health & Human Services successfully used two Health Impact Assessments (HIA) to inform decision makers about the potential health risks and benefits of improving and expanding transit services in Boone County and the city of Columbia, MO. One HIA showed the health impacts of public transportation including access to employment, access to health care, and improved social support. A second HIA helped the city understand the health impacts of using a utility fee to pay for transit. Both HIAs shaped the city of Columbia’s revamped transit system, which is set to re-launch in August.

In this webinar, Lisa Goldschmidt from PedNet and Jason Wilcox from the Columbia/Boone County Public Health will discuss how this powerful tool helped bring health into transit policy.
