In an April 2011 Rankings in Action webinar , Kirk Smith, president and CEO of the Greater Flint Health Coalition (GFHC) commented that the 2011 County Health Rankings were "...a good tool to wake people up.” Ranked 78th out of 82 Michigan counties for health outcomes and last for health behaviors, Genesee County leaders appreciated the wake up call to create a County Health Rankings action plan.

Eating Smart and Moving More in Columbus County, North Carolina

A simple message has taken center stage in Columbus County, North Carolina: “Eat smart. Move more.” It’s shared in schools, churches and county offices. Even a call to the Columbus County Health Department meets with a recording of Health Director Kimberly Smith reminding residents to take a brisk 30-minute walk every day and to eat more fruits and vegetables.

How Washington County, Wisconsin Residents Stay Healthy

Washington County is one of the healthiest places to live in the state of Wisconsin and County Health Director Linda Walter wants to keep it that way. In 2008, the county ranked as one of the top 10 healthiest counties in a check-up done by the University of Wisconsin’s Population Health Institute (UWPHI). In a similar report released on February 17, 2010, the county was cited again as one of the healthiest of 72 counties in the state.

Focusing on Unhealthy Behaviors in Muskegon County, Michigan

When the 2010 County Health Rankings were released, Muskegon County’s Healthy on the Shore coalition was already in the planning stages. But the information in the Rankings — where the Michigan county ranked 64th in health outcomes and 70th in health behaviors, out of 82 counties — helped reinforce the need for the task force, focusing on improving unhealthy behaviors in the area.
