The hospice use measure represents the percent of chronically ill Medicare patients who enrolled in hospice care in the last six months of life.
Estimates of hospice use were calculated by the authors of the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care using Medicare claims data for the years 2001–2005.
There is wide consensus that hospice services provide superior comprehensive end-of-life care for individuals than care in an institution.
