Visualizing the Data

Maps have become a powerful way to convey important health information. For visualizing data or conveying information, mapping can be an important tool. Using maps to view data may uncover important regional/geographic patterns. We’ve compiled a list of resources where mapped data is available for download.

County level data

  • Map the Meal Gap – Provides food insecurity, SNAP, poverty, and food cost data.
  • ESRI Story maps – Has a search tool to find data on doctors’ offices, obesity, diabetes, poverty, traffic injury data, and more.
  • Interactive Map of Health Disease and Stroke – Contains maps of heart disease, stroke, social environmental conditions, and health services.
  • US Health Map – Maps measures of life expectancy, poverty, and obesity-related data.
  • Measure of America – Maps measures of health, education and income.
  • Opportunity Index – Provides a snapshot of what opportunity looks like at the state and county levels.

Health data available for other geographic units

  • Community Commons – is an interactive mapping, networking, and learning utility for the broad-based healthy, sustainable, and livable communities’ movement.
  • Walk Score® – Provides city and neighborhood data based on the ability of residents to walk or bike to workplaces, shopping centers, or public transportation.
  • Health Map – Provides data on disease outbreak monitoring and real-time surveillance of emerging public health threats
  • Chronic Disease GIS Exchange – is a forum for sharing specific examples, ideas and techniques for using GIS to document geographic disparities, inform policy and program development, and build partnerships.
