The single-parent household measure is the percent of family households with children that are headed by a single parent (male or female householder with no spouse present).
For the 2010 Rankings, estimates came from either the 2000 U.S. Census (for less populated counties) or the 2005-2007 American Community Survey: the measure was based on the percent of all households run by a single parent (male or female householder with no spouse present) with one or more of their own children < 18 living at home.
Adults and children in single-parent households are both at risk for adverse health outcomes such as mental health problems (including substance abuse, depression, and suicide) and unhealthy behaviors such as smoking and excessive alcohol use.
