County Health Rankings at 2011 APHA Annual Meeting

The 139th annual American Public Health Association (APHA) meeting is coming up (October 29-November 2) in Washington, D.C. and the County Health Rankings will be there! Find out more about the many sessions we’ll be participating in via the descriptions and links below. And don’t forget to stop by our booth in the Expo area (#2052), where we’ll be collecting stories about your local health improvement efforts and asking for your feedback on the mobile version of www.countyhealthrankings.org.

Sunday, October 30

8:00am (ET)—County Health Rankings: Moving from Data to Action to Improve the Health of Your Community
The purpose of this Learning Institute is to empower participants to improve the health of their communities through discussion with County Health Rankings authors and funders. The Institute will offer the opportunity for participants to use, discuss, and seek advice on how to best apply Rankings data, tools, and resources to plan strategies to deploy in their home communities.

Monday, October 31

8:30am (ET)—Advancing Community Health through Policy, Advocacy & Systems Change
This session will demonstrate the ways that legal, policy and advocacy efforts create healthy minds, bodies, and communities and will explain resources available to communities and their leaders for making policy, advocacy, and systems changes. It will also introduce a new initiative to help community leaders work together to translate the County Health Rankings into action and to implement programs and policies proven to improve the factors that most affect health outcomes.

Tuesday, November 1

10:30am (ET)—The County Health Rankings: Epidemiology in Action
This session will focus on the epidemiologic methods used in the annual County Health Rankings. The presentation will describe the rationale for health ranking; selection of measures; sources of data; methods used to combine measures; approaches to account for small area estimates; and approaches for communicating results to policy makers and the public.

Wednesday, November 2

10:30am—Political Implications of Accreditation, Regionalization and County Health Rankings
This session's objectives are to describe three evolving issues that may impact the structure of public health agencies and potential partnering opportunities resulting from these issues; discuss strategies and messages for translating the County Health Rankings into community action; and discuss evidence-informed policies to improve the health factors in the County Health Rankings population health model.

On Tuesday, November 1 at 10:30am (ET), there will be a session featuring multisectoral perspectives on using the County Health Rankings to mobilize community action in Wyandotte County, Kansas.

On Tuesday, November 1 at 2:30pm (ET), there will be session featuring the County Health Calculator—an interactive web-based tool that shows the correlation between social determinants (like education and income) and health.
