Single-parent households is the percent of all households run by a single parent (male or female householder with no spouse present) with one or more of their own children (< age 18) living at home.

Estimates of the percent of households run by single parents were calculated using data from the 2000 U.S. Census and the 2005–2007 American Community Survey (ACS). Data for sparsely population states come exclusively from the 2000 Census; data for remaining states are based on ACS data.

Adults and children in single-parent households are both at risk for adverse health outcomes such as mental health problems (including substance abuse, depression, and suicide) and unhealthy behaviors such as smoking and excessive alcohol use.
