High school graduation, commonly referred to as the averaged freshman graduation rate, is reported as the percent of a county’s ninth-grade cohort in public schools that graduates from high school in four years.
For the 2010 Rankings, estimates of high school graduation were calculated using two data sets from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES): (1) the Common Core of Data, Local Education Agency Universe Survey Dropout and Completion, Restricted Use Data File and (2) the Public Elementary/Secondary School Universe Survey Data File, both for 2005–06. For states that did not have completion data reported in NCES data files—Kentucky, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Utah—we used state data sources to estimate high school graduation. For these states, data were from the 2007–08 school year.
For the 2011 Rankings, estimates were based on the restricted-use versions of the LEA Universe Survey Dropout and Completion data and the
Public Elementary/Secondary School Universe Survey data. These data were requested from NCES for the school year 2006-07. As in 2010, we used state-reported data for Kentucky, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Utah for the 2008-09 school year.
The relationship between more education and improved health outcomes is well known, with years of formal education correlating strongly with improved work and economic opportunities, reduced psychosocial stress, and healthier lifestyles.
