College degrees represent the percent of the population age 25 and older with a four-year college degree or higher.
Estimates of the population age 25+ with a college degree or higher were calculated using data from the 2000 U.S. Census and the 2005–2007 American Community Survey (ACS). Data for sparsely population states come exclusively from the 2000 Census; data for remaining states are based on ACS data.
The relationship between higher education and improved health outcomes is well known, with years of formal education correlating strongly with improved work and economic opportunities, reduced psychosocial stress, and healthier lifestyles.
