Motor vehicle crash deaths are measured as the crude mortality rate per 100,000 population due to on- or off-road accidents involving a motor vehicle. Deaths due to boating accidents and airline crashes are not included in this measure.
These data were calculated for the County Health Rankings by National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), based on data reported to the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS). NCHS used data from 2000–2006 to create more robust estimates of cause-specific mortality, particularly for counties with smaller populations.
A strong association has also been demonstrated between excessive drinking and alcohol-impaired driving, with approximately 17,000 Americans killed annually in alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes.
