Homicide is represented as a crude death rate due to murder or non-negligent manslaughter per 100,000 population.

Homicide data at the county level are present for select U.S. states that do not have easily accessible, reliable violent crime data (AK, AZ, AR, CO, CT, GA, ID, IN, IA, KS, KY, LA, MN, MS, MT, NE, NH, NM, NC, ND, OH, SD, UT, and WV). These data were calculated for the County Health Rankings by National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) using data from the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS).  NCHS used data for a seven-year period to create more robust estimates of cause-specific mortality, particularly for counties with smaller populations.

Because homicide is one of the five offenses that comprise violent crime, we use homicide rate as a proxy when violent crime data are not available.
